Custard? came the hopeful plea…

It felt like spring had sprung a week early. A cool start saw a healthy group at the club this morning. The long ride started off to Dagfields, and we headed out with the aim of visiting Radway Green. The early morning sunshine and only light wind was most welcome, and we headed out on […]

Delamere Learners and Lazies day.

Can I just say before I continue, that is Lazies up there in the title, it’s not a typo with the potential of belittling our heroic female members on this International Womens day. Thanks to Andy Beswick for a much improved ride title. In the end there was 11 of us rocked up to the […]

Bingley – bashed.

Bingley – bashed.

I’ve heard of the route known as the Bingley Bash before, but never really considered it as as one of those ‘before you die’ rides, however the description given in the Singletrack magazine that plopped through my door a couple of weeks after Christmas was a bit enticing, so there’s a plan as good as […]

Cramming for Llanberis…

Cramming for Llanberis…

We had a large group out on the long run today, no doubt prompted by the imminence of the club weekend to Llanberis in two weeks’ time (eek!) Jim led us out through Davenham and Swettenham to Congleton – an incident free ride other than Heather getting a puncture and Carol being told off by […]

Delamere, differently familiar.

Delamere, differently familiar.

The first Saturday of February offered us mountain bikers near perfect conditions for our traditional Delamere local ride. Given the lack of rain we’ve had over the last couple of weeks the trails definitely lacked the “quagmire” label that they often attract over the winter months, and where the damp did remain for the most […]

WVCC in the running for Decathlon Cyc...

WVCC in the running for Decathlon Cycling Club of the Year!

Today marked the date of our club run which included the Downhill Freewheel attempts from anyone who wished to take part! We cycled out at a brisk pace, with only the slightest delay due to a large ‘crack’ that most riders thought was someone taking pot shots at us with a gun. Not to be, […]

Club Dinner – 7th February 2015 – Don’t leave it too late!!

Only a couple of weeks now to our Club Dinner, so make sure that you contact Graham to get your tickets. This year we’re back the the Winnington Park Recreation Club, and it’ll be a great evening with a chance to not recognise all of our club members when they dressed in anything but lycra(!) […]

We are proud to announce that WVCC will be the organising club of the 2018 J-B @TLI_Cycling national RR Championship , to be held at Siddington on 12th August 2018

Tom Simpson " A bird on the wire " by Andy McGrath.

An excellent insight into pro racing in the 60s . Full of anecdotes not all complimentary, and great photos of Simpson in a bye gone era.

Whether you love him for his humour , sheer aggressive and impulsive racing style, his Britishness in marketing himself in order to gain publicity for his sponsors and money for himself or his class and incredible guts .

hate him for being a drugs cheat in the days when doping controls were in their infancy , bringing the sport into disrepute on a massive scale with his death on that fateful day , 13th stage , 13/07/67 when he collapsed and died on Mont Ventoux .

There is no denying he was a trail blazer along with a handful of others who ventured to the continent about 60 years ago in search of glory .To my generation they were our source of inspiration and our guiding lights.

It was thanks to those pioneers that have ultimately led to British riders in a British team , winning the Tour de France on 4 out of the last 5 years .

Something that Simpson died trying to achieve !
