If I hadn’t seen a Sustrans post about it, I’d never have known about it, but visiting the Newcastle area now and again, I had to check it out.

It’s a tunnel you see, under the River Tyne, but not your usual, cars, buses and other motorised transport affair, this was built for pedestrians and cyclists only, and not only that, dedicated tunnels for each. How cool is that? It’s also free. Win, win.

So, here are a few images of said tunnel recently re-opened.

There is a main building at each side, housing the escalators

And another building housing a lift. You can just see the white roof of the opposite main building on the other side of the river.

It’s an impressive construction once you get inside.

Wooden slatted escalator, circa 1951.

One for cyclists, one for pedestrians. Simple.

and we’re off to Jarrow..

For the future, being built, an inclined lift. Ride your bike in, ride it out.

Nice to see initiatives like this project to benefit cyclists and pedestrians first by updating old infrastructure, rather than an after-thought to other transport projects!

If you want to find out more about this, worth a visit with your bike if you are in the area, then look at http://www.tynepedestrianandcyclisttunnels.co.uk/
