Not sure where the shorter ride went, but the longer ride, led by Jed, went to Thurstaston (not easy to say if you have a lithp). It was like 8 green bottles. We started with a nice, companionable and conversationally-compatible bunch of 8 and set off through Crowton and beyond on a pleasantly-roundabout route to Delamere Forest (including a steep hill up to near Hatchmere, which I’d not done before), where Craig left us, and then there were 7. Graham and Dave McKay left us just before we got to the A56 and Andy Poole at Chester, by which time there were only four: Jed, John Chrystal, Kevan and me. We rode out along the river into a strong headwind: it must have been tough on the front – I stayed as close as I could to whichever wheel was in front of me! Having ridden to within 100 metres of Two Mills, Kevan and I wimped out and left John and Jed to get to Thurstaston on their own. Did they get there? That’s the question. Maybe one or other of them will post a comment on this blog to let us know. Knowing Jed, he will have persuaded John to ride out to New Brighton for a 100 miler!

Thurstaston – then there were two

Thanks for the write up Eleanor. Yes, John and I made it to Thursaston. I am guessing that it was probably another 12 miles or so to our destination but what a great ride. Travelling along narrow lanes and eventually onto the Wirral Way, both John and I were struck by the change in the character of our surroundings; that 'seaside' feel and the quality of the light and air. The cafe was very busy but ok. We met Dane and his charming girl friend at the cafe. They'd driven out there for lunch. Before heading home, we trundled up to the Sailing club and enjoyed a wonderful vista right out across the Dee estuary at its widest point and beyond to the open sea.The ride home was brisk and took in a brief stop at Chester waterfront (obviously!). We came back through Waverton, Tarvin, Kelsall etc. A very enjoyable ride and great company too. John's total would be well over the 100 and mine was high 80s.
