Last night Tony Booth and myself rode the old man’s Seamons CC Road Race at Siddington, Matt Ellis was in the Junior event. 3 laps of the Congleton circuit in changeable weather. I started reasonably, had a couple of digs towards the end of the first lap, both of which were brought back. Tony went with a move that looked like it would stick but again it was brought back.

We both drifted towards the back of the bunch to get our breath back and at this point 2 things happened; a hard attack went off the front and a guy just ahead of us unshipped his chain and was swerving over the road trying to get it back on, causing all sorts of chaos. Because of the time it took to get around the unshipped chain guy, there was already a gap to what was now the main field, so 4 of us and then 3 (me, Tony and a guy from Seamons) chased and at one point got within 75 yards of the back of the bunch. Alas, that was the closest we got to them and they slowly drifted in to the distance and after about a lap they were out of sight. Nevertheless the 3 of us worked hard together till the end.

A really hard night spent chasing then and something of a lesson learned!

I don’t know how Matt did as I didn’t get to speak to him at the end.
