Going to throw an idea out there see how people like the flavour.

I really enjoy a good club run, but 70 miles is not quite enough when the days are longer. I used to regularly ride 100+ on a Sunday, occasionally knocking on the door of 180+.

So I am wondering if people would be interested in some longer summer rides, taking us further afield, pace 14-16mph average. Probably start earlier than the usual 9.30 and have a good 10 hours in the saddle.

Let me know what you think, got plenty of good routes to pick from.

Sounds good. You can tell you've got kids when you want to spend 10 hours in the saddle.

A few century rides sounds like a great idea. Not sure about 180 😯

Maybe we could even venture out in the cars a bit.

A loop of Anglesey perhaps...

Nice!! Could do a trip to the seaside (somewhere cheesy like Blackpool) in the summer. Be a good 60 miles each way and a bit of fun.

180 is very much into Derek's Audax territory!

You can't be serious Woody - I come from Blackpool and when we moved to Cheshire in the late 70's I sometimes rode Northwich to Blackpool or vice versa. The direct route is awfull through Wigan etc - there is a better route about 80 miles taking in Bolton and Winter Hill - but really there are far nicer rides - I could suggest a few if you drive to Preston, Lancaster or even Kendal (all within an hour and a half by car - not a problem in Summer)

following on from suggestions of big miles what about the Wild Wales Challenge?
I've ridden it a couple of times - the basic facts are:

  • it always starts and finishes in Bala

  • It's on August bank Holiday Sunday

  • its usually between 70 and 90 miles with lots of climbs

  • there are several hundred ride, the organisation is great and the entry is very reasonable

  • all finishers generally get a slate plaque engraved with a scene and event details

as an incentive what about challenging for the club prize, usually won by Macclesfield Wheelers or Wolverhampton Wheelers for the most finishers (think it was 30 last year!!) some of the clubs make a weekend of it .

the website is merseyside DA with a tab on the left to Wild Wales:
