Guardian Cup and Scratch points after Round 9

Following a bit of a delay over summer, here are the updated points tables for the 2 competitions that we have running this year over our club 10 mile time trial series.

Firstly, the Guardian Cup. We have 2 scoring rounds left this year. After round 9, Paul Connor has stretched out a nice lead over second place Anthony Booth, with a 21 point gap, and given this year’s form, has consistently ridden and improved over the season.

In the scratch series, where again, your best 7 rides are counted, with points given from the fastest to the slowest each week, Colin Carthy is our current leader in the competition, scoring the fastest club time in round 6, and 3 consistent second place results over 3 of his other 6 attempts. He leads Dan Robson by 3 points, and Jim Duffy by 14 points.

Points are below, and as always, 2 exciting events to go to finish the series and battle for glory!

We are proud to announce that WVCC will be the organising club of the 2018 J-B @TLI_Cycling national RR Championship , to be held at Siddington on 12th August 2018

Tom Simpson " A bird on the wire " by Andy McGrath.

An excellent insight into pro racing in the 60s . Full of anecdotes not all complimentary, and great photos of Simpson in a bye gone era.

Whether you love him for his humour , sheer aggressive and impulsive racing style, his Britishness in marketing himself in order to gain publicity for his sponsors and money for himself or his class and incredible guts .

OR

hate him for being a drugs cheat in the days when doping controls were in their infancy , bringing the sport into disrepute on a massive scale with his death on that fateful day , 13th stage , 13/07/67 when he collapsed and died on Mont Ventoux .

There is no denying he was a trail blazer along with a handful of others who ventured to the continent about 60 years ago in search of glory .To my generation they were our source of inspiration and our guiding lights.

It was thanks to those pioneers that have ultimately led to British riders in a British team , winning the Tour de France on 4 out of the last 5 years .

Something that Simpson died trying to achieve !
