WVCC Open 25 Mile Time Trial – 6th August 2016

Bright sunshine, a strong field and a healthy number of club volunteers meant that this looked like it would be a good, and potentially fast day.

As the day started, and the first results came in, we weren’t waiting long till Lee Winslow of Wills Wheels CC stormed over the line with a 59:03, but soon followed by a flying Nigel Wood of PBK-Santini with 56:26 to set the standard.

As the early finishers came across the line, times were gradually chipped away, with a 56:13  from Alan Cooke of Peak Road Club – 56:13, then  a huge chunk of time down to a 54:14 as Ben Norbury of Congleton CC came in.

No-one challenged this time until the hot favourite, Charles Taylor of Team Botrill flew over the line with a brilliant – winning – time of 52:02.

There were some challenges for us as organisers on the day, not least the terrible mobile phone signals – which causes me and Chris to run out of the HQ and wave a phone around to gain a clear signal to speak to the guys at the finish line. This did cause some times to be incorrectly recorded at the time, but these were all corrected at the end of the day.

As riders returned, some said that King Street was heavy going due to the wind, but this didn’t stop 29 of the riders going under the hour, and a few riders just missing the hour by a handful of seconds.

Winners for the day were Charles Taylor – 52:02, Jack Schofield – 53:24 and Ben Norbury at 54:14.

In the Vets 40-49 event, Darren Maironis – Coveryourcar.co.uk was 1st with 54:23, and in the 50-50 category, Alan Cooke of Peak Road Club recorded 56:13 for his win.

Vet 60+ was won by Roger Wrenn of Macclesfield Wheelers with a 1:02:06, followed by our own Ewart Howkins, who rode an impressive race with a 1:03:33 for 2nd place.

Jill Wilkinson, who said that she hadn’t been racing much, rimped home for the ladies win with 1:01:08, and as an early starter, waited and waited but was never challenged for the top spot.

Team prize was awarded to Seamons CC with an impressive 2:51:30 for Adrian Hughes, Chris Siepen and John Spearman.

Derek Hodgins of Stockport Clarion, at the young age of 82 and still motoring on, came home with a time of 1:15:28.

All the results are in the tables below, and there is a gallery of images taken on the day on our gallery page or by clicking this link: WVCC Open 25 Mile TT 2016 – WVCC Open 25 Mile TT 2016 – gallery

Thanks to Chris for great organisation, the marshalls for doing a great job, and Jo for a long day organising drinks and food for the riders. For signing on duties, thanks must also go to Nicky, and especially young Georgia, who made the day a lot easier by handing out numbers at the sign-on desk.
