This Sunday you will get the once in a lifetime opportunity to see many of the greatest British cyclists of all time in a Grand Prix De Gentleman time trial at Marthall near Chelford. A Grand Priox de Gentleman is a 2-up time trial where the older rider sits behind the younger one for all but the last mile of the race. The race has been organized by Warrington road club as a tribute to the late great Johnny Helms who produced cartoons for cycling weekly for about 60 years. Johnny was a life long member of the Warrington RC.

Go to the following link for a start sheet and a run down of the top riders in the vent. Download the .pdf file to see / print the colour programme. http://www.rttc.org.uk/Home/tabid/36/itemid/2186/Default.aspx

You will never get this chance again, so go down and support the event.

Dave

Hi Dave,

I am going to this. It was mentioned in Cycling Weekly last week. It would be great to see Graeme Obree and many other great names from times past cycling on our patch!

Great event. Peeled off early from club run to the start line. Fantastic day for it. Tons of people out. Saw you other club runners on the way out at the top of Stocks Lane...

For those that missed the presentation, the time trial was won by Carl Ruebotham and Derek Hodgkins. Their actual time was 0:57:47, while the VTTA STD was 1:21:48 +24.01 MPH 24.609. It was good to see a local connection/ ex Weaver rider jointly win, while Derek (V76) joked that he didn't look at his HR monitor to check that he was in the zone, but to check that he was still alive! As others have said, beautiful weather, plenty of Weaver Valley riders out, and so many cyclists on all the roads. A great day!

There are some fantastic photos on the Cycling Weekly website of the Johnny Helms Memorial Time Trial.

http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/galleries/photos/29981/1/4/johnny-helms-memorial-grand-prix-des-gentlemen.html

I spotted local supporters Carol Pardoe, Mavis Ross, and an unidentified Weaver Valley rider in the crowd. I am sure that you will spot people you know too. There are super pictures of all the competitors, including a nice one of Yvonne McGregor and Graeme Obree. I thought that Barry Hoban still looked like a cool guy, with his trendy charcoal Pinarello t-shirt! (He has never lost it - and I will never find it!)

Not what I heard...

..heard that you had to be educated. Is this true?
