No it wasn't just you, it was terrible. It just gave the impression that all cyclists are a load of weirdo's, which doesn't really help the cause for trying to make cycling mainstream. O'bree is a a legend in the sport, but he came a cross as being a bit strange to say the least and Gary Fisher looked like an ageing hippy and I think he had smoked something he shouldn't before he went on air!

The Top Gear type approach didn't work and i can't see it lasting. However they said that Coronation Street would only last 6 weeks so you never know.

This one looks a little more informative than the ITV drivel ❗

5 Part series starting 30th August.

I have just watched the first episode of 'The Cycle Show'. Contrary to previous posts, I thought it was quite good. It was varied, informative and entertaining. I can understand why serious 'roadies' may feel the show was lacking somewhat but at least we've now got a cycling show and I'm sure the producers will respond to feedback from viewers. As a 'non mainstream' cyclist myself, I liked the guests and Graeme Obree in particular - The World would still be in the dark ages if it weren't for 'weirdos' and eccentrics.

😆 You made me laugh Jed. Sorry ....I'm not being impolite as I also class myself as slightly unorthodox or "weird" being a fixed rider (although I'm sure many will disagree!). I totally agree with you that characters who don't fit the mould and do things their own way make life far more interesting and occasionally somebody like Graeme O'bree comes along and turns all accepted practices completely on their head, through pure genius.

My only point about the programme was that they were placing too much emphasis on the unorthodox characters and instead of attracting the masses, which is clearly the intention, it could have put them off. Having said all of that I saw it last week and it does seem to be improving a little so maybe they will get the balance right after a few episodes.

Cheers

Dave 😉

Thanks for the reply Dave and I agree with your sentiments. The most recent episode is better. I think it would be good if they could profile a typical road club (like WVCC for example). They could also inform viewers about all the different facets of cycling such as time trialling, audax, criteriums, sportives etc.

only saw the first episode and gave it an "owt's better than nowt" rating..

"The World would still be in the dark ages if it weren't for 'weirdos' and eccentrics" - perfect Jed, how dull life would be it we were all the same.

Woody, that womens cycling thing your putting up on the web is a credit to the club and yourself, well done mate.

I am almost fanatical in following anything to do with cycling, but I don't bother with The Cycle Show - I preferred to watch ITV4 highlights of the Vuelta. 😀 The repeat of The Cycle Show was early on Sunday morning when everyone was out on their bike....!!! 😯

Robert suggested they would be better off showcasing Mountain biking, bmx or some other type of cycle sport. These small 'magazine' bits could be used for a lull in the competition. 💡

In a half hour show they are trying to do too much here - too London-centric, no explanation of who personalities are ( a whole show for Gary Fisher, Graeme Obree, Eddy Mercx please), and presenters who clearly don't cycle (and make Ned Boulting look like a pro!). 🙄

Are they trying to appeal to racing cyclists, commuters, beginners, sportivistes, weekend warriors, touring cyclists.....who? All in a weekly half hour programme? It is clear to me that they have no real objective at all. I am glad they have attempted to do this, which is long overdue. I am just bored with the result!! 😕

I've just watched the most recent edition of The Cycle Show' on iplayer and I take back all the positive comments I made previously. I was highly unimpressed by the weak interviewing skills exhibited by the presenters, they made no attempt to ask anything at all probing or slightly interesting. It seemed like they were having to spin out the content to fill the hour. This is a wasted opportunity.

I've got to concur with that! The interviews are clearly 'loosely' scripted, lack knowledge, research, and all the good things that an interviewer should have at his disposal and be able to deliver. In fact, it was best when Jeff Banks sat there and talked with knowledge to fill in the gaps!

🙄
