It's that time of year and I'm looking to buy a new set of mudguards for my road bike.
What do people think about the Crud road racer clip on mudguards, any good or should I steer clear?
Also if I have mudguard eyes can these guards be fitted to the eyes or do they only fix directly to the forks with their clip system. I can see abrasion occurring to the paintwork where they clip on - what experience do you have regarding this potential issue?
Look forward to your feedback and I'm sure there will be others thinking the same with the weather as it is at the moment.

My advice would be that if you have mudguard eyes, then fit bolt on guards. If you don't fancy them and decide to go for "clip ons" then protect your frame in some way (tape) as I have found they do mess up the paintwork a bit. Hope this helps 🙂
I used them last winter and found them to be excellent. The instructions advise taping the frame/forks to protect the paint. If you go on the Crud website theres a video explaining how to fit them.
They have just brought out a Mk 2 which looks even better.

If you plan to use these 'Crud' guards on wet club runs, you'll need to extend the rear blade. They are just not long enough to prevent the rider behind you from getting sprayed. You can do this by rivetting on some extra plastic to the rearmost section of the back blade. I have used the plastic from an empty fabric conditioning bottle in the past. You can easily cut out a length with scissors and fashion some shape into it using your fingers.
If you can fit proper mudguards, I'd do that and I'd still add some extra plastic to the rear blade for good measure. Your efforts will be appreciated by your fellow riders.

These Mk2 guards certainly look okay. I would be interested to see how they perform in the wet. Well researched Jules.

Did the club ride today with the new guards on the bike. Very easy to fit as the version 1 was. Rear mudguard very low on the rear wheel. No complaints from people behind, in fact people wanted to be behind me(not sure weather thats because no spray or hiding out of the wind 🙂 )

Well I rode with them today and I thought they were useless - probably because I had so little clearance. The mud (and there was lots of it, the minor roads we used were covered in it) just got stuck under the mudguards and I ended up with loads of resistance which was v. frustrating. I think the only answer is to have a proper winter bike designed to take proper mudguards...

There's something in that. I tried them on my Bianchi, but there was no way they would have coped today. Crud products say that if you can get a 4mm allen key between the brake caliper and tyre, then they'll fit. I'm not so sure. In saying that, even my winter bike was getting clogged today. We managed to go down the muddiest of Cheshire lanes I think!
