River Dee Bank Route Closure
Local cyclists are warned that the cycle/footpath along the bank of the River Dee (Route 89/5) is closed by the Saltney Ferry footbridge. The closure started on 14 January 2013 and it will last for approximately 10 to 12 weeks. The closed section is that part of the path that runs in front of the houses on either side of Ferry Lane and the footbridge.
The purpose of the closure is to facilitate the construction of a new flood defence wall on top of the existing embankment either side of Saltney Ferry Footbridge. These works will be carried out by a contractor on behalf of the Environment Agency Wales. An alternative, sign-posted route for cyclists and walkers runs around the back of the houses. Although the alternative route is fit to cycle on, it will only be a 1.5 metre wide hardcore surfaced temporary path.
A further inconvenience is the closure of the Saltney Ferry footbridge itself to enable the existing parapets to be dismantled and new parapets installed. This work will start in early March 2013 and will last approximately 6 to 8 weeks. Unfortunately there is no alternative route other than the Grosvenor Bridge, Chester, or the Blue Bridge, Queensferry.
Please take note of these closures to avoid unnecessary inconvenience. Further updates about the progress of these works will be posed here as they become available from the authorities responsible for the projects.
But the bridge closure is delayed, due to the need to change Contractor. Revised closure dates not known yet, but notices will be posted on site in advance. Confirm - the bridge is still open
