Dear all,
We've had some good news today in that we have 100 entries for this year's Cheshire Classic. We only have room for 70 riders so it'll be a tough job to chose the field. We have some excellent names in there, riders are coming from all over from Aberdeen, Isle of Man, Wales, London...you name it. To be honest there is only a handful of riders from the North West! We even have the Scottish National team rolling up.
The race takes place on Sunday 28th April. It's a big event for the club and I hope you put it in your diaries to help out. It means a lot to have you marshalling, representing the club nationally.
We have an increased prize fund plus two new prize competitions.
We currently have sponsors Breeze, Epic Cycles, Delamere Dairy and Roberts Bakery. We're announcing a new sponsor and prize competition this week. And also Halfords UK are offering mechanical support too. If you're interesting in sponsoring the race (perhaps you run a business or have influence in marketing) then please get in touch.
Cheers
Woody
Fantastic job mate. 🙂
Would love to have offered my services, but I'm racing in Gt Budworth at 10am in the TLI Onimpex Classic.
You've done a great thing here Woody. I hope the day goes smooth, and is an event to remember!
Hi Woody,
You have done an amazing job, and getting so many entries is a huge success. Maybe you could give the Weaver Valley CC more publicity both on the Cheshire Classic website and on twitter?
Well done and good luck on race day!
Claire
Cheers for the comments guys. Just a heads up, we have a new rider Q&A from our very own Caroline Fearon. Great to have Caz sharing her experience before the club 10s get under way http://www.cheshireclassic.co.uk/new-tips-and-advice-from-caroline-fearon /"> http://www.cheshireclassic.co.uk/new-tips-and-advice-from-caroline-fearon/
Yes well done Woody. I would be interested in your response to Claire's post.
Well in response to that, I'm not too sure what more I can do. The website mentions WVCC quite a number of times including on the main page together with a number of WVCC riders interviewed on the website, both Facebook and Twitter profiles mention it is organised by Weaver Valley CC and throughout the year I mention about club runs, charity rides, races, time trials (both of which we gained a number of entries from those Tweets), cyclocross, retweeting news stories which we get and the Llanberis training weekend.
So it is being done. At the same time I also need to be conscious of sponsors who need airtime, together with considering the national audience the race has (especially the balance of content for riders from Scotland and Reading who perhaps don't want to hear about WVCC all the time) and also supporting Women's racing as a whole too.
It is tricky to get a good balance so any suggestions on what I'm doing to improve on the above most welcome.
Thank you for your considered reply Woody.
There is no conflict between 'airtime' for sponsors and promotion of WVCC. I don't know what arrangement you have made with the sponsors but I can see a clear opportunity for some of the local firms you have on board to promote WVCC to their employees and customers. Roberts Bakery would be a powerful company to help spread the word about cycling with Weaver Valley.
You are doing well Woody, I just feel that you need to be mindful of maximizing the benefits to WVCC. I have more ideas if you are interested.
Our sponsors have been brilliant, we are very lucky to have them, they've promoted the race and WVCC, the reach through our sponsors alone has been to 20,000 people on Social Media.
Hi Woody,
You're doing all the hard work and that effort is showing with the amount of interest shown by the riders at the highest level in the sport. Terry has built up a race with a great reputation after many years of effort and your ability to generate even more visibility using the power of the internet is building on Terry's legacy, which is great.
As you say you have maintained a balance between advertising the club, the sponsors and generally promoting cycling across the board and I think you have shown great skill in achieving that balance. So just keep doing what you are doing and the rest of the club can help in what ever way they can to make your life easier before the event and on the day.
I'll happily marshall as usual and I'm looking forward to a good race which the quality field should hopefully deliver to reward your efforts. I agree that people will not appreciate having our club name rammed down their throats at every opportunity and if they can see that we promote professional and exciting races they won't forget who we are in any case.

Dave
Well done Woody, I am learning all about this with the John Boote race and I have found it hard but it will be rewarding on the day I am sure.
Count me in to Marshall 🙂
Les
A very encouraging and well deserved post from Dave (and I wasn't having 'A Dig - I was showing an interest and offering a view).
I agree with most of your sentiments Dave but the point about 'ramming WVCC's name down people's throats' was not what I was proposing. I was suggesting raising awareness through our local sponsors so that people know about us and what we can provide and from Wood's reply, this is happening. I hope you appreciate my motives are genuine and my thoughts well meant.
...........from Wood's reply !!, Sorry Woody, no disrespect intended - a mere spelling mistake, I did mean '..Woody's reply..'
Hi Woody,
It is good to see that you have already taken suggestions on board and featured Caroline on the website. Why not make the WVCC name and logo prominent at the top of the Cheshire Classic website next to the British Cycling one - that would not be over-selling? (Also, you 'organise' the race, and the WVCC 'promotes' it.)
As everyone agrees, you are doing a great job building on from Terry Veals legacy! Well done! 🙂
Claire 🙂
PS I will be marshalling too!

It's a good job you highlighted those actually because BC like us to use the term "organised" only and I've been meaning to update them. I have to get all press releases approved by them before distribution and that's a term they have a problem with. Also the reason for having the banner the way it is is due to following brand guidelines from BC for the race.
