Lots of WVCC folk out this week, on a warm sunny evening.
I have only a vague idea of what happened generally because I was too busy chatting (what’s new I hear you say). That’s apart from my own race when I was far too puffed to chat. Alan went off the front after 3 laps or so and no-one had the courage to try and get across to him, so he time trialled in glorious isolation to an excellent win. Behind him various people tried, but no-one managed to get away and I managed to stay with the bunch and even had a (rather pathetic) attempt at a sprint finish. Notable in the sprint was a 16 year old Jess Crampton (sister to Matthew Crampton), who looked great in pink and came in third – well done girl – one to watch. Other riders out tonight (sorry if I’ve missed anyone) were Dave Astles in my race, Garry Brown, Ewart, Max, Les and Kev in the over 50s, John Conboy and Richard Munro in the over 40s and Gareth, Craig, Derek, Chris Cain and Andy Newby in the youngsters’ race – Chris Cain got into a good-looking break but I think that got swallowed up. Lots of WVCC talent involved in running the event including Martin on crutches with a bad knee, and an impressive contingent from the Wednesday Wrinklies – and even more WVCC talent amongst the supporters, including the junior Conboys demonstrating that they have inherited their father’s natural turn of speed, on their scooters. Great atmosphere, good racing and it’s nice to ride on smooth tarmac for once!
