For those of you who appreciate such things, Andy Wilkinson has been re-writing the record books again this weekend.

His competition record of 525 miles for the 24Hr TT has stood since 1997 and at that time he beat the previous record that had stood for 20 odd years by 16 miles.

This weekend he rode the National 24Hr for the first time since 1997 and did 542 miles!!!!!!!!!

No that is not a typo........542 miles and he is now 47 years old. Apparently on a windy Saturday and on an undulating course he averaged 25MPH during the day and slowed a bit at night to average 22.56MPH. That equates to 2 consecutive 270 mile 12 Hr TT's or 22 consecutive 66 minute 25 mile TT's.

He has got to be by far the greatest long distance cyclist who ever lived and does it all on a glorified mountain bike!!

I propose him for guest of honour at the club dinner, if he isn't busy receiving his Knighthood.

Nothing short of incredible that! Is that official? 529.65 is still provisional on the CTT site? Either way, chapeau to the man...

Andy Wilkinson was an absolute legend in my eyes long before this latest epic in the 24 hour and if what you say is correct Dave then I am completely dumbstruck at the ability of the man . If he ever writes a book on his cycling exploits then I will be the first in the queue to buy it . Not only is he a brilliant time trial rider , he is a former Tour of Britain rider ( Milk Race ) and also famed for his touring exploits in this country and the continent as well as being so modest about his achievements. Great idea to book him for the club dinner asap.

I can also vouch to the fact that he is a nice bloke. When Nick and I were at the Tyneside Vagabonds TT back in May, which Andy had just won by the way, seeing our Club colours he came over for a chat. I can also remenber the speed at which Andy passed me and disappeared out of sight...amazing!!
