Jim, that's a really good link that you've posted, and one which we should all perhaps take note of.

It's very easy to upload your Garmin maps up using Garmin Connect and Strava and all manner of other social sharing sites. These routes are very accurate. If you have the software though, it's actually quite easy to edit your routes. Software such as Garmin's Basecamp is free and aloows you to connect your GPS unit to your PC and upload your route to your PC where you can edit it (taking out the final few miles of the route to and from your house for example) before uploading it to the site of your choice. There are also many other free pieces of sofware out there that will allow you to 'trim' your route. Obviously this taks a few miles from your upload, but although this nicks something from your on-line bragging rights, it's perhaps worth it to protect you from those who would seek to liberate you of your carbon beauty!

The other - and slightly lower tech - method of recording your GPS journey minus a few miles, is of course to start recording a couple of miles out from home, and switch off a couple of miles before reaching home... 🙄

Even easier, Strava has a Privacy option that hides 500m - 1km from any given location, ie home address. Therefore a better view to share.

...and while I'm wittering on, if you do use Garmin Connect, then you can limit who can see your activities to your own connections, similar to Facebook sharing options - see:
