The route sheets are pretty detailed - the odd times I've gone off course is when I followed someone else instead of looking at the route sheet.
Also if you know the key points you need to go through it's ok if you miss a turn as long as you accept you may ride a bit further but know how to get to the next checkpoint.
You should also get the routesheet before the ride as it isn't available to download for this event - spend a bit of time with a map to know where the route goes, often on lanes rather than main roads. If I'm a bit unsure I sometimes put it in a mapping program and then transfer a GPX type file to my Garmin 500 - ok they're not great for navigating but I have done Audaxes and hardly needed the routesheet apart from checkpoints, and not needed to use a map at all. I sometimes print a map out from the mapping software and put it in a plastic bag just in case.
If anyone wants a quick tutorial on navigating with a Garmin 500 let me know. I've entered so may well do a GPX anyway
It's a good idea to have the routesheet in a sealed plastic bag, (sometimes provided at the start) fixed to your bars to refer to, there are mapclips but a bulldog clip fixed to the bars would do, alternatively I've seen riders use elastic bands to fix it to their forearm so they can see the relevant bit of route at a glance.
Few tips:
1) the sealed bag helps if it's raining as a routesheet can quickly become unreadable
2) where there are lots of turns and junctions you need it handy as keep stopping to get it out of a jersey pocket is not ideal
3) take a small pencil as there may be info points along the route where you need to record something on the record card
Hope this helps
Have finalised the route - going to check directions once more. Will try to produce gpx files for those who want it. Will break it into 2 legs in case it goes belly up. I occasionally find GPS stands for Go Pedalling Somewhere - not necessarily where I intended. Those who enter on line willl get an email containing route sheet and gpx files, those who use snail mail, that's what the saes are for - if you want gpx email me. Dave has highlighted some useful info - I go for the bulldog clip A4 clear plastic wallet on the brake/gear cable myself. You will have the options of a one or two cafe strategy, only Eureka will be a control
thanks for the advice 🙂 will try and ride with a group of people.
Thanks for all your advice Dave and Derek, I am looking forward to this and will just have to accept I will be doing a few more miles for when I get lost 😆 and Phil I can try and follow you but not sure I will keep up 😆
I'm entered! Looking forward to it, done the odd Sportive and charity rides but not a proper Auxax before. Looking forward to it.
