Did you buy your 800 as stock with just 'basemap'? Or would you suggest buying a pre-loaded map bundle?
Is there any site in particular which is best for route creation and then downloading on to the 800 for turn-by-turn directions?
Thanks for all your advice, Ady.
I bought the GB Discoverer Plus Trail bundle at the time ( http://www.wiggle.co.uk/garmin-edge-800-gps-plus-gb-discoverer-150-trail-bundle/) because it was on a 20% off offer, and bought a new HRM strap separately - again 20% off, and a couple of extra bike mounts. That was the lowest cost option overall.
I like my OS maps, so I prefer them. All a matter of personal taste really. As any GPS used for route finding, assistance or planning is concerned, the better the mapping (and calculation algorithms), the less grief you'll have!
If just recording where you've been, then it doesn't matter too much, as you'd probably be uploading to Connect/Google Earth for analysis. In this case you may even be better off with a lower spec model (they're all GPS, they all tell you where you've been!).
As I said previously, I already had speed/cadence sensors fitted to my road bikes already, so didn't need this with a bundle. There are probably better deals available at the moment I'm sure.
As for best free route creation, a belting start is to look at bikeroutetoaster.com. Very impressive for a web based free tool, and you can generate and download the routes to your PC/Mac or Garmin.
At the end of the day, all the 'cool' stuff aside, the core of the GPS is there just to tell you where you are on the planet! Everything else is 'nice to have'!
Just took delivery of my Edge 800, thanks to all for your advice.
Don't have a clue where to start, the touch screen is intuitive and I presume the device is simple to set-up/use.
Now to get some mile's in! 😎
