"So who is going to Prees? Ah, go on Keeny."
So said Mr Williams yesterday morning and so i found myself agreeing to go on the long run. When i left the house on a lovely, warm, blue sky morning i told myself i would go out with the short run for an hour and then plod home. After all in the 6 months following the accident i have only been out on the bike for about 100 miles and not with the club at all. As you can see from me agreeing to Jimmy's request i have no self control whatsoever.
So 14 of us set off, Jules, Tony, Jimmy, Quiet Carol, New Man Colin, Iain, Elaine, Me and 6 more who i am afraid are new to me. I do apologise.
Jules, Tony and Jimmy spent most of the day on the front, leading us out on a very sedate pace via Whitegate and hence through a collection of quiet lanes unencumbered by 4 wheeled traffic. Generously, just before the cafe Jules decided to take us on a short excursion to see a triathlon feedstation and after causing a minor amount of chaos here we headed off for the final few miles and the inevitable cafe sprint which took place somewhere in the distance from me with my poor heart reading 188bpm trying to keep up.
Predictably the cafe was heaving with motorcyclists but the cafe staff are nice and efficient and no sooner had i sat down then beans on toast were ready. Depending on your viewpoint this is either the best cafe in the area or something at the other end of the spectrum. Either way it is reasonably clean, reasonably cheap and reasonably welcoming, not all cafes can claim to all of this.
Setting off from the cafe it was notable just how much less banter there was (apart from Quiet Carol obviously) and again we went down an unending collection of fast, narrow lanes via Nantwich and Winsford where Jimmy. New Man Colin and Me turned off. Colin did excellently for a first time out although he admitted his legs were on fire and i think he is masochistic enough that we may see him out again.
I returned home happily with just over 80 miles on the clock.
A great ride on a perfect day, thanks to Jules, Tony and Jimmy for leading all day. See you next time.
