This was on our way back across the Berwyn hills in January a few years ago. The Wayfarer track takes you across the tops a little further to the north on a ridable gravel track. We’ll meet at Llanarmon DC 10am and head over to Llandrillo for some lunch before heading back on the bridleway pictured. It will be a full day and you’ll need to be experienced at off road riding and bring water proof and food and drink.

Wow, that picture's a few years old now!
Best turn out for a while with 7 of us heading over the Wayfarer track to Llandrillo from Llanarmon at the head of the beautiful Ceiriog valley. Steve M, Kev U, Rob J & Stevie C, Matthew & Derek and a recovering me rode up to the high point of the Wayfarer where a memorial and a logbook in a tin stand to commemorate the off-road cyclist from a few generations ago.
Losing some of my fitness after a few weeks off the bike I had taken it easy on the climb, but no worries on the descent which was surprisingly tricky as the track has been badly eroded due to the heavy winter, 4x4s and motorbikes I guess. I suddenly remembered why I enjoy mountain biking so much! Bacon butties, shandy and a round of darts at the pub in Llandrillo before we headed back, but this time on the bridleway which skirts the edge of the Berwyn mountains.wayfarer.JPG[/attachment:511qpbvw]
Thanks to Matthew for this panorama picture just as we reached the highest point before a steep descent leading to a fast track and then the road back to more shandy at the Hand in Llanarmon. An excellent ride which we all enjoyed. Thanks to Steve for this picRogue's Gallery.JPG[/attachment:511qpbvw]
The power of the forum works then nick 🙂
"The Wayfarer" was named after W.M.Robinson of the Anfield BC who was a well known cycling writer who's pseudonym was "Wayfarer" and he often wrote stories about "Rough stuff" rides as they used to be called back in the day before Mountain bikes were invented in California. This particular route over the Berwyn's was an annual ride that the Anfield BC did and in fact they often went one step further and carried on up from the pass to the summit of Moel Sych before dropping down to Cynwyd. The first time I rode this route was on an ordinary road bike (with gears!) when I was a teenager and I signed the book in the tin on the summit. I must admit though it was much more fun the second time I did it several years later on a mountain bike.
Sounds like you had a great day out as usual Nick. Maybe Moel Sych next time!! The trouble is that back in the rough-stuff days you could ride anywhere and nobody bothered if it was a Bridlepath or a footpath as there were so few cyclists riding in that terrain, but now that mountain biking is is so popular walkers get very upset if we stray on to a footpath.
I had a look at the map, as promised to find the high gain from the road at Llandrillio up to the summit, where the photo's were taken. 600m! Certainly felt like to too!
