I refer to your website enquiry and our telephone conversation earlier today regarding Footpath/Cycleway closures at Higher Ferry Footbridge and the vicinity.
If I can break it down, the first temporary closure is to facilitate the construction of a new flood defence wall on top of the existing embankment either side of Saltney Ferry Footbridge. These works will be carried out by a contractor on behalf of the Environment Agency Wales and will commence on 14th January 2013 and will last approximately 10 - 12 weeks. Approximately 65 metres of the cycletrack/footpath will be closed on the western side of the footbridge and approximately 80 metres will be closed on the eastern side of the footbridge. There will be a temporary diversion in place during the course of the works which will divert around the back of the properties in this area. The alternative route is proposed to be a 1.5 metre hardcore track. I have attached a map below indicating this diversion and an english copy of the legal notice which is currently onsite.
As well as this temporary closure, the authority is also having to close Higher Ferry Footbridge from 28th January 2013 to allow for the existing parapets to be dismantled and new parapets installed.
These works are essential and the alternative routes available to cross the River Dee will be The Blue Bridge, Queensferry or The Grosvenor Bridge, Chester. The works are due to last approximately 8 weeks. There is a possibility that the works themselves wont actually start on the 28th and it maybe that the Bridge is not physically closed until mid-February.
Again, I have attached a copy of the english notice which will be placed onsite tomorrow morning.
