Debate on Cycling APPG report 'Get Britain Cycling'

On Monday 2 September MPs debated a motion relating to the All-Party Parliamentary Cycling Group's report 'Get Britain Cycling'. The Backbench Business Committee scheduled this debate following a representation from Dr Julian Huppert.

"That this House welcomes the recommendations of the All-Party Parliamentary Cycling Group’s report ‘Get Britain Cycling’; endorses the target of 10 per cent of all journeys being by bike by 2025, and 25 per cent by 2050; and calls on the Government to show strong political leadership, including an annual Cycling Action Plan and sustained funding for cycling."

Last night was an important moment for cycling in Britain. Cross-party support of 100 members of Parliament debated the benefits of cycling. There was also a huge and friendly Space4cycling demonstration outside, which Diane Abbott MP photographed and tweeted about. The report was compiled by the All Party Cycling Group, of which Graham Evans MP and Fiona Bruce MP are members.

The consensus and goodwill was enormous! Celebrities such as Chris Boardman were there too, and Graham Evans MP had a photograph taken with him.

Our Weaver Vale MP Graham Evans made a long speech in which he said that he is a new convert to cycling. He mentioned the Northwich Guardian Pedal Power campaign in which we have played an active part since it's inception. He also supported and mentioned our Breeze rides here in Northwich, again run by Gina Bebbington and me throughout the Summer.

We have invited Graham Evans to join us on the Guide Dogs for the Blind charity bike ride to Cheshire Ice Cream Farm at Tattenhall on 29th September. Beginners and children are welcome. There will be a Breeze and Sky Ride Local ride to join in with the Weaver Valley CC ride organised as always by Alan Silver.

I will also be posting more Breeze and Sky Ride bike rides throughout the Autumn for riders who do not yet feel confident to ride on a club run. Other exciting events and activities for novice riders in the club are coming up, so watch this space! 🙂
