Hi Mark,
Great to see such an excellent turn out and fantastic conditions after all the rain. Caroline and I enjoyed the leisurely and sociable ride in good company.
Just one amusing tale for the day I thought you might like. When we arrived at Hartford we were very surprised to meet our old friend Phil Rayner of welland Valley CC in Leicester. Phil is a class rider who is the same age as me and he won the first race I ever rode in 1977 aged 13. He is a former National Junior Pursuit champion, was a National level road man in his 20's and is the reigning LVRC champion for our age group. He has never stopped racing and has always been quick.
Phil knew your dad very well due to his LVRC racing and at the social club he said, "I was in Manchester picking up my parents for Xmas so I thought I'd come along to pay my respects to Dave but also to meet my old mate Mark Astles as I haven't seen him for over 20 years". He had been looking around the gathering in the car park but couldn't see his old mate. He asked me to point you out and I could see the bemused look on his face. It then dawned on me that he had confused you with the other Mark Astles who regularly won time trials in Lancashire and at national level in the 1980's. He laughed because he had asked your dad many times how Mark was getting on, not realizing that they were talking at crossed purposes. 🙂
Your dad would have loved to see all these familiar faces in one place and it says a lot that so many people made the effort to join the ride.
Cheers
Dave
