What an epic day on the bike, it had it all!

Setting off in the dark from my place in Manchester into rain and headwind was a worrying start. When we got going at 8am, we were a bit behind the first group, so decided to chase on as there is definitely safety in numbers when tackling such a strong headwind.

The group was about 20 strong until we got to the other side of delamere, where things split up. Next time I looked round there were 4 of us left. There was plenty of slush in the road around little leigh and Oulton Park too. Which was a little worrying, but there was a clear path for single file riding.

On the A road into Ellesmere there was a sign saying 8miles to Ellesmere, then what felt like a mile up the road, another one saying 8, then finally after what felt like an eternity, one saying 7. Then is started to sideways hail right in the face! By the time we got the the pub for the turnaround in Ellesmere, it felt like we had ridden the whole 200 km!

After managing to ride through the flooded areas, Steve fell in the deepest one! I had a puncture around 5 km from the checkpoint at the Raven Pub. The run home was quite pleasant, with the odd flooded road (don’t know how I didn’t get trenchfoot!). We were then treated to a fantastic sunset as we rode around Macc.

My total for the day was 235 km and 9 hours on the bike. By a long way the longest ride I’ve ever done and a great adventure. We even managed to answer the questions on the Brevet Card. Great day out!

LOVE the sound of this, but may not be feasable as me and Alan will need to get back to Manc.

    Thanks for the offer.

The Clayton Velo is the same day as the return Llanberis leg, so that may not be very doable.

    Sounds great Kris,

Don’t forget the traditional season openers, the Eddie Soens and Clayton Velo Spring Classic:

Ive booked onto this session. I have done one of these a couple of years ago and it was a great way to get some free track time and do some skills type stuff.

I would recommend anyone to do it!

Maybe we could meet before the xmas quiz? I will be in Northwich then and will be over early as I’ll come straight from work.

That sounds like a plan, Kris.

I missed out on a good few races last year because of them being full so early.

So yes it is imperative to get the entries in early and plan ahead.

There are a good number of races in West Yorkshire that may be worth looking at, in pratice they are quicker to travel to than some of the further north CDNWs.

Anyway, a good study of the BC website is in order.

Also, I’m looking at riding 3-4 mountain Time Trials in the early season, so you may also be interested in them. If we can get a few of us out, there may be scope for a team prize or 2!?

    Hi Jim,

It would be great to have you out with us.

In my opinion it is pushing a bit whilst on the front and a little harder than ‘easy’ when following a wheel. Depending on conditions it could be 18-20 ish mph. Stronger people, or those who want a harder workout can spend longer on the front, and ‘sitting in’ is not frowned upon. The objectives are to keep the group moving well, without hammering it up hills etc and to keep the group together.

    Fantastic Derek,

Never ridden anything like this before, looking to get some solid steady miles in the bank.

The one on the 5th Jan looks great too, I’ll have a look at that one. Anyone else interested?
