Amid a threatening sky, Jake Booth & James Risk lined up alongside Kris Zentec and a formidable array of 2nd Cat seniors for the start of the Frank Morgan memorial road race around Knowsley Industrial Estate. Kris was returning following a second place last year but was playing down his chances for a repeat performance this time round.
The first few laps of the 2.5 mile pan flat circuit were reasonably steady with Jake & James mixing it at the front of the bunch & getting involved with some of the early breaks, and Kris gently warming his legs up at the back of the group. As the pace picked up the Juniors on their restricted gears were spinning at over 100 rpm, while the stronger 2nd Cats were cruising at around 80 – 90 rpm, but amazingly continued to feature where the action was!
With 10 laps to go, and with his legs obviously warmed up to optimum temperature, Kris made a decisive move and broke away with Andrew Martin, Champion Systems. Over the following few laps they built a lead of over 30 seconds and were disappearing out of site on the long straights. A few attempts were made by other riders to bridge the gap but to no avail, and with 3 laps to go it was looking like the winning break. Coming into the final straight, Kris was on the front but despite his best efforts and burst of speed toward the line was unable to hold off Andrew, taking 2nd place for the second year in a row. A fantastic well judged ride and he had looked very strong in the break, working well together, keeping away to the end and gaining fist full of well earned points.
With the first 2 positions decided, Jake & James came into the final straight in the front quarter of the bunch as a fierce sprint for the line ensued resulting in James taking first placed Junior followed one wheel behind by Jake to take 2nd Junior, and positions 12th & 13th overall. A great ride by both in a strong field on a fast circuit, and fantastic to see such close competitive racing by riders in WVCC colours.JimDuffyParticipant21 April 2014 at 17:01Post count: 961

James and Jacob had a great race. It was a really strong field and they held a commanding position throughout, always in the mix at the front and getting into plenty of attacking moves. This really was a course where those many, many track miles would come into play, and it was obvious!
To do that on restricted gears, I can only imagine the damage they will do to the bunch once they progress to the senior ranks!
My plan was to hold back and wait for 10 to go (if we were together), and I was very lucky that a Maxgear rider came with me as they were very well represented in the bunch 🙂
