Rode the TLI Charlie Bettley Memorial race over about 50 miles on the
Swynnerton circuit today near Eccleshall , Staffs. .

    Finished 6th in the race for over 55s and one lady .( 2nd F , 5th man) .

Ewart started my race though from then on I never saw him and was not
    back at HQ afterwards ?

Real class field today with all the areas big names riding .

Alan Forrester from the powerful Graham Weigh CRC team went away on the first climb to be
quickly joined by 2 others although it was soon down to 2 of them.

They did an incredible ride to stay away to contest the finish given
how fast and tough the race was with Beth Clayton a lady rider for
Mammoth Cycles claiming a great win .

Behind the bunch split to shreds due the speed and punishing attacks on
the hills in constant light rain throughout .

Although the strongest riders twice distanced the dwindling bunch we
managed to reel them in (Keith Jones , Phil Thomas , Steve Wilkinson and Jimmy Rutherford) after a couple of very hard well organised chases which largely had the effect of shelling those who did not contribute .

In the last couple of miles Keith Jones took a flyer with the rest of
the group exploding as the finish sprint started at the bottom of the
short drag before the 400 metre drag of a finish straight .

It was like a drag race to the line , no bunch finish, more a series of
riders individually crossing the line lengths apart .
I managed to get around Phil Thomas and Dave Cuming plus one other though my legs were well and truly buckling to finish 6th .

A really well organised and marshalled race was put on by Ade Robinson and Stafford RC.

    1st Beth Clayton, 2nd Alan Forrester , 3rd Keith Jones , 4th Steve Wilkinson, 5th Jimmy Rutherford , 6th Alan Kemp, 7th Dave Cuming , 8th Phil Thomas
