A long climb took us to the top of the Garburn Pass which we descended carefully, as it's very rocky, to the village of Kentmere. I got the top part on video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avxhd1wDNJo
From the village we climbed east towards Long Sleddale and then looped back to Kentmere before heading back to Wilf's famous café in Stavely - although some preferred the fare of the Hawkshead brewery next door.

When I get the other videos uploaded I'll put a link here. Thanks for organising it Matthew - perfect weather too.

Steve M, Paul H and me on a beautiful morning for a brisk ride round the forest. I navigated (Matthew couldn't make this one) some of the brilliant singletrack, although it all looked a bit different with so much undergrowth.
I had an exciting moment when I missed a bridge and had an abrupt stop in the brook - much to Paul's amusement. But I had the last laugh returning along the Whitegate Way when he got in a tangle between a tree and the fence (it's those wide bars), jumped back up to save face, only to clip the fence and tumble down the bank. It wasn't all bad though - he did two firsts - the "impossible" climb on the perimeter trail and the steps up to the Whitegate Way from the permissive path. Here's a video of the descent from Old Pale - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi0fnUfmsIujLRFG0PNbI5w

We fielded seven WVCC riders in this event, Nick B, Tim R, Steve M, Paul H, Kev, me and our son David. It's a fabulous event, organised by Oswestry Rotary in the Berwyns, with friendly marshals out in force, and an excellent but challenging 22 mile hilly route. They set us off in groups and the idea was that Nick, Steve, David and I would set off ahead of Tim, Kev and Paul, so that Nick could get the faster riders filmed on his Go Pro..but as it happens, his Go Pro didn't work. Tim set off like the clappers, his legs spinning like he was in the start of a BMX race; and he'd shot past us slower riders before we'd even climbed the first ramp. He did amazingly: setting off in the tenth group, and then reeling every rider back other than two, who'd started long before him, and he won the event in 1hour 56 minutes. The rest of us had mixed fortunes. Paul was second WVCC rider in, with a time of 2 hours 13 minutes, Nick balanced and ground up the "steep hill with the narrow concrete strip bit" like he was an international gymnast, finishing not far behind Paul, Kev had a split tyre he couldn't fix so had to limp home, I came in second woman, in 2 hours 45 minutes, just two minutes short of the ladies' winner, Steve kept a good steady pace and enjoyed swimming in the thigh-deep puddles, and David struggled with a puncture and a mechanical....but we all enjoyed the craic and the beautiful route...at least in retrospect! We started in the rain and wind, and got VERY muddy, but the weather cleared as we rode, and once finished, we sat on the steps of the church hall eating our lunch and basking in the sunshine. An excellent event.

Next MTB ride is next Saturday, 7th March 10.00am at the station cafe in Delamere.

I've decided to specifically aim this ride at anyone who wants to try off-roading for the first time, or return to the fat-tyre fold as there's a few members who used to be regulars but don't ride out with us any more. And with no Llanberis training to worry about there's really no reason for you not to come! So, here's the plan.

Beg or borrow any off-road capable bike if you don't own one. A hybrid with knobbly tyres or a cyclocross bike will be fine as we will limit the ride to firetracks and trails that are we know aren't too muddy and have no difficult obstacles. The speed will be easy and we will have a couple of regular riders, (if enough turn up!) with smallish groups to make sure no one gets left behind.

Bring some cash for the cafe, and the kind of kit you would take on a road club run, i.e. inner tube, pump, multitool, waterproof jacket.
