It was hill climb time on Sunday and time to see if all our preparations had worked. Being the first time I had organised an event there was more than a little bit of trepidation! I needn’t have worried at all, with all the help and support in place and everyone pitching in, we were well set out and ready for the off in no time. The weather forecast had warned of wind and rain and sure enough it appeared right on cue for the riders. It was going to be a tough day on the Cat!
First out of the traps was our very own Carol Robson who battled the pretty much constant wind and rain to post a great time of 32:06 to take the ladies prize. Our only other WV entrant was Dan Robson who led off the mens event and posted strong 28:15. As other times came through for the men’s event it was clear that things were indeed ‘quite tough out there’ and we had a few reports of a couple of crashes both up the hill and down! All riders OK, thankfully with just a few cuts and grazes, so the first aid kit was out almost immediately.
The HQ seemed very quiet for a while as we sorted through the times and then it seemed everyone descended at once with riders and marshals getting inside to dry off, get warm, have a well earned hot cuppa and a feed. It was pretty horrible out there but everyone came back in good spirits having taken in some bracing fresh air.
Our overall winner on the day was Leon Wright with an excellent time of 20:12 with Tony Cope of Leek CC taking victory in the V40-49 category, Andy Ashurst taking the win in the V50-59 category and Andrew Grace taking the V60+ category honours.
Junior entrant Darren Rider of Team PB Performance rode to an impressive overall top 10 placing on the day whilst also taking the Junior category win. It would be great to see some more juniors out on the course next year.
In the team event, Macclesfield Wheelers seemed very pleased to have gained victory over Lyme RC with Crewe Clarion in third place.
So all in all a very successful day. Thanks again to everyone who helped out organising and running the event this year. Your experience, knowledge and spirit were very much in evidence and very much appreciated.
See you all next year… I think…
